Tackle coronavirus by equipping your employees

Remote working is a growing trend and, in the current world we live in, it’s never been more important to embrace mobility.

With the global pandemic of coronavirus, it’s now essential for businesses to adapt and offer their workers a remote working option should they need it.

Although adverse circumstances are a rarity, having flexibility in your business reflects in your employees. Research shows that when employees have that flexibility and remote working is done right, then their productivity, creativity and morale sees a boost. Not only that, but they’re also then given flexibility should issues arise with illnesses, child care, school closures or any other unforeseen circumstance.

However, to establish a mobile workforce, it’s essential to have the right technology.

Getting Connected

Firstly, your business needs to ensure it has secure and safe access to the internet and that your workers have an adequate connection at their home. Depending on the number of employees you have within your company, it may be useful to assess individual working needs via an internal survey and identify gaps where people may need extra support to be able to work from home effectively.

Investing in mobile hotspots or dongle technology for those employees who don’t have the connectivity needed for remote working might be needed.

Equip your Employees

Devices can also be a roadblock in the route to remote working as many workers may not have sufficient devices at home, therefore the mobility of your workforce is affected. If done correctly, the survey should again identify gaps where employees may need additional devices to work remotely.

If your company can provide high spec laptops and/or mobile devices, it increases the possibilities of remote working. If this isn’t possible, devices can often be bought on a flexible payment option plan with many companies offering cost-effective agreements for businesses.

Keep Your Data Secure

Once devices and a stable connection have been identified and provided where needed, the next steps towards a secure, safe and reliable remote working scheme would be to install a virtual private network (VPN).

A VPN is an encrypted network that makes it safe for your workers to access resources. Ensuring the workforce have access to shared drives and folders is a useful tool for remote working and, here at Daisy Communications, most of our teams have a central resource library they can access from anywhere, providing they’re connected to our VPN.

It’s an added layer of security for your central files and means that, should any of your employees’ devices or internet connection be compromised; rest assured your company data won’t be.

Conversations and Conferences

An internal company-wide communication tool which can only be accessed via VPN is also a handy tool to have during long periods of remote working. Having a tool such as Skype for Business, Microsoft Teams or Collaborate, which makes direct messaging easier, can be an effective tool for employees when working in different locations.

Not only does it offer instant communications, a free way to call each other and a useful place to host group meetings, these programmes also tackle isolation and loneliness issues which can sometimes arise when working remotely.

Whilst most companies will have some of these elements already built into their core foundations, it’s often in extreme instances when problems come to light. There’s an age-old adage ‘fail to prepare, prepare to fail’ and, in business failing to prepare for such circumstances can be catastrophic and fatal to a company.
